The Central Pennsylvania Literacy Council, Inc. was established in 1970 to help adult refugees learn to speak, read and write English. Over the years, the Council’s mission has changed to reflect the needs of the current population. Although still working with immigrants and refugees, CPLC recognizes and is committed to improving the literacy of all adults in the Greater Harrisburg Area.
CPLC trains volunteers as literacy tutors. Each volunteer is matched with an adult learner and works with the learner on a one-to-one basis. The goal of tutoring is to improve the basic skills of the learner and to help develop the learner’s sense of self-esteem.
